FRTR Circuit Standings

Runner

Please click on the FR Circuit Standings

link and check to see that we have your name, and credit for the correct number of FRTR Circuit races. If you find an error, please send an email to Joe Arnold at jarnold29@comcast.net with the correct information.  Given the size of the club, it is a monster task to scan pages of race results to find all our members and record their achievements. We do the best we can, but it is very easy to miss someone. Remember, even if you have not run a single FRTR circuit race this year, it is still possible to qualify for a year-end award by running 7 of the 8 remaining races for adults, and 4 of 8 if 19 or under.

Dick Pond Thursday Evening Run

Winston wants to get a group run started on Thursdays evenings from the Dick Pond Athletics store in St Charles. It would be a regular weekly run on the Fox River Trail at 6:30 p.m.

We had five dedicated runners show up for our inaugural run last Thursday, but we obviously need some more.  Winston believes it would be a good source of new members and an opportunity to make a difference by introducing some new runners to our sport.

Winston plans to run there on Thursdays for the next 4 to 6 weeks and see if there is any interest to continue to build on.

If we can get a core group of 6 to 8 regular runners, and two or three different pace groups, he thinks we can make it work.  Otherwise we will dismiss it as another of Winston's goofy ideas.

So come on out and join us for a 3 to 6 mile run on the Fox River Trail then some light refreshments when we get back.

Data Analyst Wanted!

I have a one time mini project for anyone with a little Excel or Database skills. We have an "Open" rate of around 60% on our e-Foxtales distribution. While that is far better then the average for electronic distribution, to me it means that 40% of the membership are not getting club communications. Our plan is to go out with a "Snail Mail paper newsletter on an annual basis, but in the interim, we need to know who is not getting the newsletter and why.  Please call me at 630.393.4952 or email w.rasmussen@comcast.net and I will fill you in on the details. I can generate lists of "sent to addresses" and "opened addresses" for the last 6 months. We are currently emailing to about 280 members and non members.

Letter from the President

Greetings Runners,

I hope that your summer is going great and you're able to get your running in during the early morning hours. August can be a little brutal when the temperature and humidity get a little too high. We don't want to lose anyone, so slow down and stay hydrated.

The 10th annual Viking Sunset Family Night is history, and it was a terrific event as usual.  The next time you see Gene Boehm on the trail, say thanks for a great job. There is always some degree of reinventing, redesigning or learning involved when you transition from one Race Director to another. A year ago there was some question about the future of the Viking when Gary Moss left, but Gene eagerly volunteered to direct the event and he did an outstanding job.  He had a lot of help from the race committee, club members, the Batavia Accelerators and the St. Charles East HS boys and girls cross country teams. Thanks Gene.

Our summer post run picnic is scheduled for Wednesday August 22nd at Leroy Oakes after our regular group run. Everyone is invited to run the Great Western Trail from the Leroy Oakes Pavilion at 6:00 p.m. then enjoy a post run picnic at 7:00 p.m. The club will provide burgers, brats and buns and the price of admission is simply a side dish, dessert or beverage to share.  Please RSVP to Dave Helmick at ginkgod@flash.net so that he can order the appropriate amount of meat. Thanks to Dave for organizing the picnic.

Club racing circuit results are included in the newsletter and also on our web page. Please review and if there are any corrections or additions, contact Joe Arnold at JArnold29@comcast.net. You need 7 races to qualify for a year end award at our Banquet in February. If you run more than 7 races, your best 7 will be used to calculate your finish position. Thanks to Joe Arnold and Randy Meyle for looking up all the results and calculating the standings.

This is a terrific club and I am proud to be part of it. Stay healthy and I will see you at the picnic, track

workouts, a race or somewhere on the trail.

Sincerely,
Winston
Words from the Editor
by Jennifer Zuri

In case you haven't heard, I'm the new editor of the FRTR newsletter, replacing Carolyn Kovash who recently resigned.  I only hope I can fill her shoes in this role!  Since I love to run, and I love to write, taking on the role of editor seems a perfect fit for me, and an opportunity to give back to the sport I love so much!

I started running about 3 years ago, and before that taught aerobics and worked as a personal trainer, so fitness has been a part of my life for over 20 years.  I currently spend my non-exercising hours as the marketing communications manager at Aquascape, Inc. in St. Charles  (I also serve as the race director for the Aquascape 5K).  Some of you may have seen Aquascape's wedge-shape, green roof building while driving along Kautz Road.  If you're ever in that neck of the woods, come on in and I'll be happy to give you a tour of our eco-friendly building.

I'm hoping to run the Chicago Marathon this year, but a recent ankle sprain at the Muddy Buddy earlier this month is threatening my well-laid plans to achieve a marathon PR this year.  If I'm not able to run Chicago this year, I'll settle for a half-marathon and a century ride on my road bike.

If you're like me and love to talk about running or anything fitness related, drop me an email at jzuri@mchsi.com.  Suggestions for newsletter articles are always welcome, so don't be shy.  This is your newsletter and I want to make sure you get what you need to keep running and staying healthy!

Note: This is the first of hopefully many FRTR members to be highlighted in FoxTales. If you're interested in being featured, send an email to jzuri@mchsi.com.  If approached for an interview, please say yes!

Q: How long have you been running and how did you get started?

A: I have been running 'off and on' since high school but not with any consistency.  I got started running as part of our training for swim team in high school and I hated it, that's why I was a swimmer. I couldn't stand running in the August heat but it was something I always turned back to when I couldn't get to a step class at the gym. I've been running consistently (4-5 days a week) since 2004 after having 2 kids and being a stay at home mom. I really needed something that was just for me.

Q: How many miles per week do you typically run during the summer?

A: If I'm not training for a marathon I run between 20-30 miles - it depends on how much traveling my husband does and what I can sneak in before he leaves for work.  When I'm training it's a minimum of 30 miles and goes up from there.

News from the Batavia Accelerators

The Batavia Accelerators run year round and have officially finished the summer running program. There are many highlights this summer starting with having between 45 and 50 kids coming to practice throughout the summer. We have had many parents walking and running along with us too. Our runners consists of hockey players, football players that are getting ready for the upcoming season and kids who just want to run and have fun with other kids.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids As Injury Preventer
By David Ginsberg

Many of you probably have heard or read somewhere about the importance of consuming omega 3 fatty acids to improve health. These fatty acids are found in high quantities in foods like salmon, halibut, flax seeds, soybeans, tofu,  pumpkin , walnut and  grape seed oils.

Maintaining adequate carbohydrate stores prior to, during, and then following a workout will aid performance and help prevent injury. In addition, adequate protein intake is also required for muscular repair and to prevent muscle tissue breakdown. But how fats play a role in nutrition for the athlete is an often overlooked and under-addressed subject.

Welcome to Carmen Cordogan and Sandy Kurth who signed up for a family membership.

Welcome to Tim Williams and John Weitz who signed up for an individual membership.

Congratulations to Rachel Hegele, Tom Spadafora, and Dave Dilorio who renewed individual memberships, and to Mark Drendel, Fritz DeJongh, and Randy Meyle for renewing family memberships.
The Race Place August_2007
Winston Rasmussen

There are a lot of good races ahead as we enter the fall racing season. The Mark McCormick races have a distance for everyone.  The DeKalb Cornfest, Park Forest Scenic 10M/5K and Fall Festival are FRTR club circuit races.

This is the 30th and final year for the Park Forest Scenic 10 and registration will close soon, so if you haven't registered, don't wait much longer.

The Windrunner 10K is hosted by our good friends the Lisle Windrunners, another local running club with many common members including yours truly. The race is run on trails through the Danada and Herrick Lake Forest Preserves. Many past participants have rated this one of the best 10K courses in the Chicago area.

There are always great refreshments and raffle prizes all taking place in a terrific setting. FRTR members receive a discount and you can sign up on-line at www.signmeup.com/56710. DRK will provide "instant results" and a technical t-shirt is guaranteed to pre-registered runners.

I added the Shorewood Scoot on September 8th to the schedule because this is a relatively new race (2nd year) and I just certified their course. The race is run primarily on a paved bike path through a scenic forest preserve and I really liked the course.
