A Word from the Editor~
Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!
Jennifer Zuri
My favorite run of the week is by far the Saturday long run, although it didn't always used to be that way. Back in in 2005 when I was training for the Chicago marathon, my first marathon, I dreaded those long runs. But now, I treasure them.
As a general rule, I run on Saturday with a small group from Sycamore that I met up with about a year ago. We start anytime between 5 and 6:30 a.m. It's great because I'm back home before most of the family has rolled out of bed.

Meet Randy Meyle ~ Runner's Bio
What is one of your most memorable running achievements? In 2002 I took 1st place in my age group in CARA's circuit standings.
What racing distances do you prefer? I don't like marathons. I mostly stick to half marathons or less.
Can you share a couple of your personal records?I ran my fastest 5k race at the Geneva Viking Sunset race in 2002, finishing in 16:51. My PR for the 10k distance is 35:19 at the Walter Payton run in 2002.
Does your family share your love of running? My wife Linnea and I have 3 daughters and everyone runs. Some like it more than others. Elisa, our oldest daughter, ran cross country for West Aurora this year. Greta will be a freshman next year and also wants to run cross country. Hannah is probably the most talented but wants to be an actress instead of a runner. Oh well.
Does your family join you at racing events? We go to races a lot as a family. This year we all participated in the "Run for Animals" in Wheaton.
What's your next running goal? My latest ambition is to run in the national masters indoor track meet in Boston this coming March. I plan to enter the 3000 meters and 1500 meters.

First Ever "KindOfAMarathon" Proves to Be Winter Success
Did you run Chicago this year and remember the temperature in China Town exceeding 100F? Do you remember swearing you'd never complain about running in the cold again, or was I the only one? Let me tell you a little story about the
1st EVER "KindOfAMarathon"...
Not so long ago in a faraway place called Sycamore a brave group of bipedal locomotion enthusiasts gathered to answer the age old question "Why are we here?" No, not the existential question. We actually wondered why we were out in 7F weather to run a marathon on a snow and ice covered Great Western Trail (it was 11F by start time). Could the answer be because we like to run? Sure! Because we like to be outdoors? You bet! But the real reason is because we thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship felt in the company of our extended running family.

| All I Want for Christmas
We polled Fox River Trail Runner members to find out what hot items are on people's Christmas lists for Santa this year. Here are the responses ...
Lillian Prince: A subscription to Runner's World magazine.
Rachel Hegele: Running socks and running pants.
Stephanie Mytych: Running shoes and warm running gloves.
Linda Davis: A health club membership in order to train for a June triathlon.
Joe Thorn: Lightweight reflective running vest for running at night, the "Stick," and some tech clothing.
Dave Ginsberg: New Garmin with heart rate monitor, and a winter Coolmax thick, wicking top.
Winston Rasmussen: A race director for the Great Western Half Marathon, and a 3-hour 45-minute finish time at the Boston Marathon.
Steve Richey: A pacer for miles 60-100 for the Rocky Raccoon 100 on February 3rd, 2008.
Randy Meyle: Some running gloves that don't freeze my fingers. It's December and I'm already complaining!
Tom Jurgens: An Under Armour cold gear top.
Chris Beytes: I didn't ask for it, but it showed up at my doorstep last Saturday and got its first workout when I did 4 warm, easy, fun miles in the comfort of my basement. If you guessed a treadmill (Life Fitness gets you bonus points), you are correct. If you guessed those $1.99 "Toasty Toes" foot warmers available by the cash register at Home Depot, you were close, but not close enough.
Pat Walsh: I asked for a bike trainer so I can ride indoors in the winter. I have all the running gear that I need and I run outdoors so I'm okay on the running side.
Joe Roth: A personal best race for all FRTR members, a very safe and happy 2008 for all FRTR members, a personal best for myself - a sub 3-hour marathon is this year's goal, a year's supply of ibuprofen, glucosamine, and chondroitin, a personal masseuse (female) - the old bod ain't what it used to be, and finally, some stocking stuffers like fruitcake, power bars, egg nog Endurance Gatorade, and blue spruce scented Body Glide. What more could a runner want?
Jennifer Zuri: Something I've been wanting all year - the Garmin 305 Forerunner!

Cross Training for Better Health
By David Ginsberg
For pretty much all of us the racing season is over except for those doing Disney. This is the time of year to let your body recover a bit by taking some time off from running. This is especially important if you run 4 or more days per week, or if you do not do any other exercise besides running. A short period of inactivity 1-2 weeks at the most is adequate. Once you go beyond this time period deconditioning will set in. It is important to realize that you will not, and should not attempt to maintain peak fitness during this time of year. Training all year round at high intensity results in over-use injuries, as well as physical and mental fatigue.
I find this to be a fantastic time of year to cross train. Indoor biking or swimming is much gentler on the joints of the legs and can still give you a great cardio workout. In addition, elliptical machines and steppers can also be utilized but are more similar to running so you do not get as much rest, or as much of the benefit of making your muscles work in a different manner. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, skating and downhill skiing are a few other winter sports that can provide great cross training.

The Race Place
You've been racing all summer and fall, so why stop now? If you search hard enough on the internet, you'll be sure to find a race or two, or maybe even three or more, to keep you motivated and running (preferably outside) during the frosty months of winter! Here are just a few races in the area, but don't rule out traveling to warmer locations in search of the perfect race.
