FRTR Member Featured in FIRST
Our very own Krista Mikulski is featured in the July issue of "First" magazine. She's shown as an example of how proper diet and running can enable a person to gain control over their weight and health. Next time you're standing in the checkout line, be sure to take a look at page 33 and see Krista posing on her all time favorite trail at Burnidge Woods. |
Dick Pond Thursday Evening Run
Winston wants to get a group run started on Thursdays evenings from the Dick Pond Athletics store in St Charles. It would be a regular weekly run on the Fox River Trail at 6:30 p.m.
We had five dedicated runners show up for our inaugural run last Thursday, but we obviously need some more. Winston believes it would be a good source of new members and an opportunity to make a difference by introducing some new runners to our sport.
Winston plans to run there on Thursdays for the next 4 to 6 weeks and see if there is any interest to continue to build on.
If we can get a core group of 6 to 8 regular runners, and two or three different pace groups, he thinks we can make it work. Otherwise we will dismiss it as another of Winston's goofy ideas.
So come on out and join us for a 3 to 6 mile run on the Fox River Trail then some light refreshments when we get back. |

Data Analyst Wanted!
Winston Rasmussen
I have a one time mini project for anyone with a little Excel or Database skills. We have an "Open" rate of around 60% on our e-Foxtales distribution. While that is far better then the average for electronic distribution, to me it means that 40% of the membership are not getting club communications. Our plan is to go out with a "Snail Mail paper newsletter on an annual basis, but in the interim, we need to know who is not getting the newsletter and why. Please call me at 630.393.4952 or email w.rasmussen@comcast.net and I will fill you in on the details. I can generate lists of "sent to addresses" and "opened addresses" for the last 6 months. We are currently emailing to about 280 members and non members.

Letter from the President
It's hard to believe that the Fourth of July has come and gone and we are heading quickly toward the Labor Day weekend. This Labor Day marks the end of an era for another hallmark race in the area. The Park Forest Scenic 10 Mile race is in its final and 30th year.
Thirty years ago I did not know the race existed, in fact other than the Boston Marathon; I probably could not name another race. I thought running was for high school and college aged athletes, military boot camp and a few super athletes aspiring to win an Olympic medal.
I thought anyone who would run 20 to 30 miles a week for fun, then go out on a Holiday and race 10 miles to fulfill some competitive need, was one sneaker short of a pair. I'm glad I was introduced back to the sport and I don't mind if non runners think I am a little obsessed, or is it possessed?
There are not too many races in our area that have been around to celebrate 30 years. Most are planned, financed and managed by volunteer organizations that rely on the membership to provide leaders and volunteers to perpetuate the event. Our two primary club events, the Great Western and Viking Sunset are just babies, 10 years old but we hope to keep them viable events for the long haul.
I want to say thanks to Gene Boehm who stepped up as Race Director and the race committee who has been working so hard with plans and preparations for the Viking Sunset. The long range weather forecast looks great and I hope that I see a lot of club members and their families at the race.
Sincerely,
Winston |
Choosing Your Marathon Fuel
by David Ginsberg
For the endurance and recreational athlete today there are more choices than ever for energy drinks, gels and bars. They come in a variety of flavors and sizes depending on the intensity and duration of the exercise you are going to perform. All of these choices can be a bit confusing for the consumer. Hopefully, the following will help to sort some of this out.
First and foremost, children should never drink full strength Gatorade - this comes from some top researchers at the University of Texas. Gatorade is not made for children to drink full strength and should be diluted 50%.
In addition, you must realize that this drink is primarily sugar and not much better than any other sugary drink. On very hot days where exercise exceeds one hour it is appropriate to supplement with Gatorade (50% dilute for kids) or other energy drinks to replace some lost calories and minerals.

A Tale of Two Buses
By Willy Newman
Two remarkable things happened in April of 1996 that I will never forget. The first occurred on a day that is probably familiar to most competitive runners, the 100th running of the Boston Marathon. It was significant, in that it was the largest marathon ever, with almost 40,000 runners (including about 2,000 "bandits"). The record did not last long, however, as it was broken within just a few weeks by attendance at the London Marathon.
There were about 800 buses lined up at the starting point to take the runners out to Hopkinton for the 12:00 P.M. start. For some reason, my bus was right behind a bus with almost all "seniors." I would guess that the average age was around 70 or 75, and I wish that I had asked someone why this particular bus had so many old timers. I remember that my bus had a random assortment of ages, as you would expect.

Keeping Blisters at Bay
When racking up the mileage during hot humid weather, keep in mind the following tips for minimizng blisters.
1. Avoid Vaseline like the plague. It cakes up on your socks and seems to attract dirt, sand and junk.
2. Hydropel and Two Tom's Sport's Shield are the best to use as a lubricant when your feet may be exposed to moisture for extended periods.
3. In addition to the two just mentioned, BodyGlide and SportsSlick arealso great products. Bag Balm is still favored by many athletes.
4. Many runners are finding Injinji socks work well for them and wear a thin oversock to give the added benefit of two layers of socks to glide against each other and further reduce friction. If doing this, be sure you are not adding too much bulk into your shoes, which can make them too tight.
5. Rather than Baby powder or talc, use a high quality powder like Two Tom's BlisterShield. Zesorb and Gold Bond are other good powders.
6. Trimming your toenails is one of the keys. Trim them short and file them so there are no rough edges felt when drawing your finger up and across the tip of your toes.
7. We ar shoes that fit well. I support buying them from trained sales staff that know how to evaluate your running gait and foot strike.

| Viking Sunset 5K and
Jamie LaForce Youth Mile By Gene Boehm
The Fox River Trail Runners are hosting the 10th annual Viking Sunset Family Night on Wednesday, July 25th at 7PM.
The Viking Sunset has for many become the highlight of the summer racing season with a competitive 5k race, a youth mile race for children under 12, a 400 meter Junior Jog for children 9 and under, and a 100 meter Toddler Trot for children 5 and under.
The race takes place at the Geneva High School Sports Complex at 1400 Gray Street in historic Geneva, Illinois. This year, the Fox River Trail Runners are honored to have Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns serve as the race starter.
Also, Tom LaForce will serve as the starter for the Jamie LaForce Youth Mile. The youth mile is named in honor of Jamie LaForce, an active charity runner and member of the Fox River Trail Runners who passed away in 2001 from a rare series of brain lesions.
Proceeds from the Viking Sunset Family Night fund college scholarships awarded by the Fox River Trail Runners and also to support the Geneva High School Boosters.
Race day registration is available from 5:45 to 6:45 PM at the race.
