The President's Message
By Winston Rasmussen
My editor said I need to keep my message to 300 words and I already wasted 16 so here goes. First I need to thank and compliment Jennifer for doing a great job. We are very grateful that she stepped up and took on the role of editor. It's not easy, requires skill that I don't have and it is probably the single biggest contribution to the success of the club. All that and she completed Chicago on a sprained ankle, under extreme weather conditions. Nice job Jennifer.
The club has held a year end Banquet in February each year to recognize our award winners, and in the past it has been a somewhat formal sit down dinner. I think this year we may alter that venue a little and make it a party with prizes. Circuit winners will still get their awards and recognition, but many members don't race the circuit, so there should be more for them. It's still in the planning stage, so stay tuned and keep an eye on our web page.
One last thing: As we wrap another year, head into the Holiday season and make plans for 2008, we can feel good about what we have accomplished but we can't rest on our laurels. I plan to remain on the Council but will step down as President. We also have a couple of holes to fill on the Council, so now is a great time to help shape the future direction of the Club. It is not too early, in fact, it is the right time to start planning for our 2008 calendar year, and I hope that you will consider joining us. Finish the year in good health!

A Word from the Editor
What is it about the holidays that seems to give us the idea it's time to overindulge? We eat too much, drink too much, spend more money than we should, party too long, and more. But why is it that we generally don't apply that same festive enthusiasm to our running program? Unless you're one of those rare breeds that love running in the cold, snowy weather, chances are you're ready to cash in your fitness regime for a little more shut-eye and time on the couch. So how does one compete with all the things that can interefere with a solid training schedule this time of year? The answer is easy.

Meet Rachel Hegele ~
A Runner's Biography

How long have you been running and what prompted you to start?
I've always been athletic and would go to the gym to workout to keep in shape and to enhance my golf skills. I played competitive golf at Saint Charles High School and earned a golf scholarship at St. Ambrose University. Usually I'd run on the treadmill for 30 minutes to an hour, or the Stairmaster and then lift weights.
I started out running just to stay fit, but now I run competitively as well. One day I thought to myself, I wonder if I could finish a 5k? Then I tried a 10k, and then a 10-mile run, and even more races. I continually tried to beat my previous times at each race. My first race ever was the Geneva Community Classic Flodloppet in which I ran the 5k in 1997, with a finishing time of 25:04:9 - and 8:05-minute mile average.

Running the JFK 50-Miler
By Steve Richey
This year I had the pleasure of meeting some friends to run the 45th JFK50 on November 17. For those of you not familiar with the event, it's one of oldest and largest ultra races around. It even has a mini-expo for packet pick up the day before. Its origination had to do with JFK challenging his staff officers to cover 50 miles on foot within 20 hours, thus giving birth to one of the many conspiracy theories regarding JFK's sudden demise. The course is a combo of fairly rugged trails, flat, soft tow path, and street pavement. It's a point-to-point from Boonsboro to Williamsport in Maryland. The event had approximately 1,400 entrants, with 1,070 finishing in the allowable cut-offs. The course included a number of well-stocked aid stations. I had never run in an ultra with a crowd of runners like this (once ran 70K by myself in a smaller ultra). The course was never crowded, but at my pace, there were plenty of folks around all of the time.

First Ever - "KindOfAMarathon"
By RC Fagan
December 8 at 8:45 a.m.
Sycamore Park, back pavilion, off Airport Road
This first ever event is limited to the first 40 runners to claim a spot. This is a no frills race -- an electronic clock, race bibs, and minimally manned water and Gatorade stations will be approximately every 2 miles on this out and back Saturday marathon on the Great Western Trail -- starting and ending in Sycamore, IL. Entry donation is $2.50. The event has a five hour cutoff, and the half way turnaround will be closed after 2-1/2 hours. No chips, no trophies, no shirts -- just a marathon distance run on a fairly flat and soft surface with RC and 39 friends. Finishers' certificates will be awarded. A nearby pub may be available for post race refueling. To register or for additional details, contact RC at RFaganCLU@juno.com.

Which Yoga Should You Choose?
By Jennifer Zuri
As a runner, I know that improving and maintaining flexibility is important to keeping injury at bay. And as a former certified fitness instructor, I also know that a few stretches performed after a good run just isn't enough. But even knowing this, I still struggle to put in quality stretching time. If you're like me and find stretching to be a bore, why not consider joining one of the many yoga classes offered in the Fox Valley area? If you're not sure what type of yoga will best suit your needs, check out a recent article provided by Chicago Athlete that can help you determing the type of yoga that's right for you. The Race Place
As the weather becomes more inclimate, races grow scarce but there are still a few from which to choose.
