Race Circuit Qualification 6

Running

Due to the cancellations of some races on the FRTR club circuit this year, the Runner's Council has decided to reduce the number of races required to qualify for a year-end award from 7 to 6. Your best age-graded results from 6 races will be used to calculate year-end standings.  There are 4 races remaining on the circuit so even if you have only run 2 races year-to-date, you can still qualify.

Dick Pond Thursday Evening Run
Cancelled

We tried late in the running season to get a group run started at Dick Pond in St Charles, but attendance was not what we hoped for. Everyone is still welcome to stop by and run from the store on Thursdays, but the FRTR group run is cancelled. We will try again in early spring to get something started.

The President's Message
By Winston Rasmussen

I did my first post marathon run early this morning in cool 43 degrees temperatures, which is about half of what it was last Sunday. I couldn't help but ask myself, what if the weather had been like this? The outcome including my time would have been a lot different.

I tried writing about something else, but it's impossible to include any comments here without discussing the Marathon. As a race organizer and a participant, I can feel the pain of both parties. As a participant it is both easy and justified to be critical. After all we are the customers.

A Word from the Editor
By Jennifer Zuri

Congratulations to everyone who slugged it out on the hot streets of Chicago during the 2007 marathon.  Although I finished an hour slower than expected, I was glad to be part of an historical moment - the first time the Chicago Marathon was ever cancelled!  And I was happy my ankle held up despite the sprain I suffered a couple months ago.  My personal philosophy is, "There's always another race on another day."

With that in mind, I'm eyeing the Rockford Marathon that's being resurrected on May 18th, after 2 decades of hibernation.  If my body can withstand another 4 months of long runs, I'll be there with bells on.

On another note, be sure to check your mailboxes this month.  We've decided to send out a print version of The Foxtales 4 times per year - one for every season.  The fall print issue will arrive soon, so be on the lookout.  It will be chock full of information, some of which you won't find in this electronic version.  And don't forget, if you have information to share, drop me a line at jzuri@mchsi.com.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Meet Jerry Marcec ~
A Runner's Biography

Jerry Marcec

How long have you been running and how did you get started?

I have been running since early high school.  I am 55 so that makes about 42 years including one extended break, which I explain a little later.  I ran cross-country and track in high school (Belvidere, IL) with limited success.  At college (Aurora University) I was the first runner to be Athlete of the Year and to be inducted in the Athletic Hall of Fame.  I never was a top runner, but I loved to compete. I got started because I love sports, but I do not have the hand-eye coordination or special skills that some other sports require to be competitive.  Besides, runners are such great people to associate with, I could not help but like running.

I stopped running for a couple of years after college, but I got back into it when I was coaching the Aurora University team so I would not look too bad on "Beat the Coach" nights at practice.   My wife, Wendy and I also coached junior high runners at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Naperville for about 6 years.

What To Do After the Marathon
Is Over
By David Ginsberg

In this month's column I thought that I would talk about a topic that is very rarely talked about and is often one of the reasons runners get hurt.  In reality, recovery is just as important if not more important to the enhancement of your overall fitness than the workouts themselves.

Proper recovery from any race, especially a marathon, should be aimed at accomplishing 5 things: replenishing lost fluid and electrolytes, replacing depleted muscle and liver glycogen stores, repairing damaged muscle cells, easing muscle soreness/addressing injuries, and finally mental recovery.

The Race Place October
By Winston Rasmussen

Since I measure race courses as a sideline, I learn about all the new events in the area. Here are two that you should consider:

Blackberry Farm 5k October 20, 9 a.m.

This is the 1st annual Blackberry Farm Pumpkin Run and will be more of a fun run for the first year. This is a nice course out and back on a paved tree lined bike trail and part on a trail around the Lake. The race is hosted by the Fox Valley Park District and you can get more information at: Blackberry Farm Pumpkin 5K Run.

Family Shelter Services 5k October 21, 8 a.m.

This is the first annual 5K Run/Walk to help victims of domestic violence.  The start and finish is at Downers Grove HS just south of Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove. A special event features a challenge to any man brave enough to literally walk a mile in women's shoes. Here is a link for more information and registration. Family Shelter Service 5K.

Come Run the Fox and Turkey Race

Run like a Fox and win a Turkey for Thanksgiving Day.  Held on Sunday, November 18 at 8:30 a.m., this Fox River Trail Runners club circuit race is a food drive event to benefit the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.  There is a 4 Mile Predictor Run and a 1 Mile Youth Run.  The Fox and Turkey 4 Mile Predictor is a unique Thanksgiving week tradition. It is a predictor race run on a 4 mile out and back course on the west side of the Fox River beginning at the West Bank Family Fitness Center in Batavia. The object is to match your pre-race predicted time as closely as possible. No clocks or watches are allowed on the runners or on the course. The goal is not to be the fastest turkey or fox of the day, but the best at predicting your finish time.

The winners are the top 25 that come closest to their predicted time, regardless of clock time, age or gender. The prizes for the winners are frozen turkeys that range from 10 to 15 pounds. Come on out and join us, and work up an appetite for Thanksgiving.

New this year will be a unique long sleeved commemorative shirt for all pre-registered participants in both the 4 mile predictor and the 1 mile youth run. Shirts will be available for race day registrants while supplies last.  Register on-line at www.signmeup.com/58058 and save. There is a $5.00 discount for Fox River Trail Runner members.

Special Request for John Quinton

Please keep John Quinton in your thoughts and prayers. John is a friend and fellow member of the Fox River Trail Runners. On Saturday September 23 at the Park Ridge 5K, John suffered a heart condition and severe head injury. Police officers and EMS personnel quickly responded, brought him back and rushed him to the hospital. As of this writing he is recovering at home and through the miracle of medical science, may be back running with us again one day.  John is a long time exceptional runner and annual award winner on the CARA and FRTR circuit. To be sure, his cardiac conditioning from running played a huge part in his recovery. Take care John, and we know you will be back on the trail with us soon.

Welcome to Tom Rairdon and Matt Simpson who signed up for an individual membership, and to Daniella Griffiths who signed up for a family membership.  Congratulations to David Basak for renewing his individual membership, and to Marlene Manning for renewing her family membership.
