Volunteers Needed!

Help keep our Great Western Half Marathon race director from losing his sanity!
Volunteers are needed to help with traffic control during the Great Western race. Adults preferred. If you're able to help the morning of May 4th, please send an email to Dave Helmick at ginkgod@flash.net. If you're running the race, the traffic volunteer is a great position for a loved one to cheer you on during the race!

A Word from the Editor~
When the Chickens Come Home to Roost
Jennifer Zuri
If you're like me, you gained a few pounds over the winter even if you kept up with your running program. When I run now with the same crew I ran with last summer, I can feel every ounce of those few pounds. More like 8 pounds to be exact, but a "few pounds" sounds better than "eight pounds."
My running friends don't seem like they suffered from winter's selection of comfort foods like chicken and dumplings or hot fudge sundaes. They still look as fit and trim as ever. But not me. Let's face it, I can just look at a brownie and gain weight.

| Runner's Bio~ Tom Jurgens
How long have you been running and how did you get started?
I've been running for 35 years. I started running my freshman year at Proviso West High School.
How long have you been a member of FRTR and what do you enjoy about it?
I really don't know how many years my family have been members of the Fox River Trail Runners. I've helped out at club races for the past four or five years.

Run Across America!
By Charlie Engle
I'm Charlie Engle and I want you to run with me across America! I'm prepping for an exciting project that runners all over the country are participating in. We briefed Jean Knaack, Executive Director of the Road Runners Club of America - who wanted us to speak directly to you. Nehst Studios is producing the feature film "Running America" - Marshall Ulrich and I will be running from San Francisco to New York in June, date TBD. We would like runners across the country to join us for a mile, then drop back and let another group run. But you may run as long as you like. We want 5 runners per mile - there's room for 15,000!

Spring Fever - A Frequent Cause of Overuse Injuries
Many overuse injuries have their roots in springtime. As the Midwest weather improves and many of us runners wake from hibernation, we are excited to get outside and off of our treadmills, or for some of us our couches.
In all this excitement to get out and feel the warm air on our face we forget the fact that we might have only run a few times a week or less. In addition, the adjustment to the friction of running on the road vs. the treadmill takes a few times, especially if you don't run with your treadmill at 1% grade continuously.

Dick Pond ~ Store for Runners
My name is Glen Kamps. I am the new manager of the St. Charles store. I have worked for Dick Pond Athletics, Inc. for more than 20 years. I have managed every store and have worked at the mail order facility in Carol Stream.
I have piloted the Shoemobile to 7 states as I sold shoes and gear to runners at clinics, meets, races, expos and festivals. I have sold shoes to Olympians, World Champions, and World record holders.
I live in Geneva, IL and have been involved with the FRTR from its inception. I have a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology; have taught wellness programs, and coached runners. I look forward, with the help of my excellent staff, to the opportunity to serve Fox River Trail Runners to the best of our ability. Our store is located on Route 31 just north of Route 64.

CARA
The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding, motivating, supporting and celebrating the running community of Chicagoland. CARA connects runners to resources that enable them to run - further, faster, better, for life.
Due to CARA's advocacy efforts, runners in the Chicago area enjoy some of the highest quality road races in the country. This race has partnered with CARA and, on behalf of its runners, has agreed to comply with and uphold CARA's road race standards. The object of CARA's Race Standards is accuracy, safety and comfort for runners. To view those Standards and to learn more about CARA, visit www.cararuns.org.
