A Word from the Editor~Guinea Pig
The Marathon Guinea Pig and the Magic Pancakes
Jennifer Zuri

Since I've heard the definition of insanity is "trying the same thing over and over while expecting different results,"  I've decided to experiment a bit with this year's marathon training.

This year I'm incorporating double the number of 20-mile (or more) runs I typically include in my training program, provided I don't suffer too many injuries along the way.  My goal was to run farther than marathon distance during training, but that's simply not going to happen at this point in the game.

Runner's Bio~ Tom Dieter

Tom Dieter
How many years have you been a runner and why do you enjoy it?
I ran track and cross-country in high school and a couple years in college.  Then I just stopped.  Almost 30 years later I decided it would be a good way to get back into shape, and hold my cholesterol at bay, and still be able to eat some of the foods I shouldn't.

After about a year of running on my own, a friend suggested I sign up for a race, an 8k.  I enjoyed it and it gave me a goal.  I ran a couple more 10ks, and then a half marathon. It took me another year before I built up the nerve to sign up for my first Chicago Marathon.

Master the Mound - Hill Training
Monday, August 25, 6:00 p.m.

MountainJoin the Fox River Trail Runners for an awesome hill-training run at Johnson's Mound in Elburn.  Meet at Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening at 6:00.

A loop just under 1 mile ascends and wraps around the Mound (the highest point in Kane County).  You can run as many loops as you want so this group run is great for beginners and advanced runners alike.

Parking and restrooms are available at Johnson's Mound, which is located on Hughes Road, between Bunker Road and Route 47.  We hope to see you at 6:00 p.m. for this great power and speed-building workout!

Knee Pain and Running
Dave Ginsberg

Knee PainI am not the biggest advocate of self-diagnosis mostly because people often attempt self treatment methods that often do more harm than good. However, the more you exercise the more important it is for you to have a general knowledge of how the body works and when to take action if something starts to hurt.

This month's article will address knee pain. If the pain began suddenly and was associated with a pop you should see your chiropractor, orthopedic or family doctor if they deal with sports injuries.

Summer Member Picnic Recap Tom Spadafora

A good time was had by approximately 40 FRTR runners at the Summer Member Picnic on Aug. 13. The group enjoyed a run and then were treated to grilled delights and great side dishes.

Members also celebrated the birthday of member Carl Hayes who didn't reveal his age but did divulge he has moved into a new race age category!  Special thanks to Tom Dieter and Christopher Spadafora for being the grill masters and Dave Helmick for lugging event supplies to LeRoy Oaks.

CARA

The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding, motivating, supporting and celebrating the running community of Chicagoland.  CARA connects runners to resources that enable them to run - further, faster, better, for life.

Due to CARA's advocacy efforts, runners in the Chicago area enjoy some of the highest quality road races in the country.  This race has partnered with CARA and, on behalf of its runners, has agreed to comply with and uphold CARA's road race standards.  The object of CARA's Race Standards is accuracy, safety and  comfort for runners.  To view those Standards and to learn more about CARA, visit www.cararuns.org.
