A Word from the Editor~
Do You Eat to Run, or Run to Eat?
Jennifer Zuri

My mother worked for a man who she described as someone who "eats to live," meaning he was thin and lanky and never ate more than his body needed.  Although my mother is another one of these eat-to-live people, the rest of my family, unfortunately, is not blessed with her genetics.

No, the rest of us all have the stocky wrestler's build of my father.  This is good if you aspire to be a power-lifter or mat-grappler, but not so good if you always wished you had long legs that look great in short shorts.

You'll notice that in several of our Runner's Bios, they're asked if they eat to run, or run to eat.  You can always tell how they'll answer before they put pen to paper.  The metabolically gifted runners typically eat to run.  Their bodies are lean, mean running machines that they properly fuel to efficiently propel them out on the road.  And it seems to me that a good chunk of our members fall into this category, which is a good thing.

Runner's Bio~ Dave Helmick

Dave Helmick
What prompted you to get involved with FRTR and how long have you been a member?
I moved to the Fox Valley area in 1993.  I really didn't know anyone in the area, but I did like running on the trail.

One day I noticed the "Fox River Trail Runners" sign on the fence near the Geneva Water Treatment plant, so decided to show up one Saturday morning.  I liked what I saw, and have been showing up ever since.  I think that first Saturday, I ran with Shella and Wayne (an "item" at the time).  Wayne was especially careful to welcome "the new guy".  I thought that was great.

What's your position on the council and what do you do?
Well, I checked on line, and it looks like I'm an "ARD".  That's either an aardvark, or perhaps an assistant race director.  That must be it.  Actually, last year I helped Gene Boehm with the Viking Sunset, (a little).  This year I volunteered to be the Race Director for the Great Western Half Marathon.  As you know, it's really not a "one man job".  I had lots of good help from all the board members.

Tuesday Track Workouts
Geneva Middle School - South Parking Lot
6:00 p.m.

Join Coach Al Edgecombe for a challenging track workout every Tuesday night.  A weekly speed work out is a must for every competitive runner.  If you want to run your next race a little faster - whether it be a 5k race or a marathon - then track workouts are just what you need to boost your speed.

If you've never participated in a track work out before, don't be afraid that Coach Al is going to push you until you're dragging yourself back to your car.  Yes, he'll challenge you, but not to an extreme you're not ready for.

So come on out and join us for these invigorating work outs.  You just might find you enjoy a change of "pace" in your normal running routine.  Hope to see you Tuesday night!
