A Word from the Editor
Pennsylvania's Best Kept Secret:
The Johnstown Marathon
Jennifer Zuri

Johnstown MarathonWhat does $35 buy these days?  A well-organized marathon through the scenic Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania, complete with spaghetti dinner the night before, a finisher's medal, a quality tee-shirt, post-race massage, a trophy for the top three finishers in each age group, free parking, and a complimentary ride up and down the mountain's incline.  Not bad when you consider the current price for a gallon of gas or milk.

This year I said good-bye to Chicago and hello to the Johnstown Marathon.  Held the weekend before the Chicago Marathon, the city of Johnstown offered its 33rd hosting of a small yet highly enjoyable marathon.  Chicago attracts over 40,000 marathoners, while Johnstown is a cozy bunch of just over 100 runners.

A Few More Reasons to Run
Dave Ginsberg

Warming UpThe September issues of the Archives of Internal Medicine evaluated the role of physical activity and susceptibility to obesity in individuals with a specific obesity gene. As you would expect, the group that was more physically active had the obesity gene variant but it was not turned on.

So, even in individuals who have a predisposition to being heavier because of their genes a little physical activity can go a long way to preventing obesity and all of the related health problems that accompany it.

Run Like a Fox and Win a Turkey
Tom Jurgens, Race Director

TurkeyRun like a Fox and win a Turkey for Thanksgiving. The Fox River Trail Runners and Batavia Accelerators are hosting their annual Fox and Turkey Four Mile Predictor and Youth Mile Races on Sunday, November 23, 2008. The Youth Mile starts at 8:30am, while the Four Mile Predictor commences at 9:00am.

This is a food drive event to benefit the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. Runners and spectators are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the food pantry.

The Fox and Turkey Four Mile Predictor is a unique Thanksgiving week tradition. It is a predictor race run on a four-mile out and back course on the west side of the Fox River beginning at River West Family Fitness. The object is to match your pre-race predicted time as closely as possible.

Running Can Slow Aging Process

Aging
Running on a regular basis can slow the effects of aging, a study by US researchers shows. Elderly joggers were half as likely to die prematurely from conditions like cancer than non-runners. They also enjoyed a healthier life with fewer disabilities, the Stanford University Medical Center team found.

Experts said the findings in Archives of Internal Medicine reinforced the importance that older people exercise regularly. The work tracked 500 older runners for more than 20 years, comparing them to a similar group of non-runners. All were in their 50s at the start of the study.
