A Word from the Editor~
Hoping the Planets Align for a Perfect Marathon
Jennifer Zuri

Whether you're voting for your favorite politician or tapering toward a fall marathon, the time has come for the rubber to hit the road - the rubber on the bottom of your shoes, that is.  You're either fired up and ready to go or you're throwing a Hail Mary in dire hopes of surviving the marathon.

What's so frustrating and challenging at the same time is the amount of time it takes to train for a marathon.  If you're a runner who always includes a double-digit run on the weekend, then the marathon is really the only race for which you have to train.  If you're used to running 10 to 12 miles at a crack on any given Saturday or Sunday, then even a half marathon isn't really much of a stretch.  Perhaps that's why the marathon continues to attract tens of thousands of runners every year.

Runner's Bio~ Joe Roth

Joe Roth
How long have you been running and how did you get started?
Over 25 years off and on. I ran cross country in high school ('80's), but mostly to prep for basketball season.  I ran sporadically after that until the late 1990's. Then I got more into it, ran 5 & 10K races.

It was after being a spectator at a marathon in Cleveland Ohio in the spring of 2000 that motivated me to try longer distances.  I ran my first marathon that fall of 2000.

How long have you been a member of Fox River Trail Runners and why did you decide to join the group?
I think about 3 years now.  I moved from Minnesota to Elgin in 2004.  I was a running club member in Minnesota; I enjoyed that so I wanted to join a local club in Illinois.  I joined to meet some new people knowing I would share similar interests and goals.

Animal Stories
Steve Richey

Cow RunnerAnyone who runs outside has them - stories about encounters with various creatures.  Most of us have enjoyed the doe followed by a fawn that crossed right in front of us as the sun was rising.  Or that coyote who quietly stared at us from a few yards off the trail as we passed by.

It's always neat to observe fox tracks in the snow, and to realize that the little guy took the route that we took that day.  And, of course, there are those annoying unleashed dogs that have chased all of us.  If you run enough, the stories can become odder and a bit humorous.

Final Preparation Steps for Marathon Success
Dave Ginsberg

MarathonThe following are some last minute tips taken from "7 Steps to a Successful Marathon," a lecture I have given to marathon runners in the past. There are 7 things you should do between now and your marathon to help insure a successful race.

Step 1: Figure out what you are going to wear. It's finally getting cooler in the morning, so go outside an hour before race time, figure out the temperature and what will feel good before the race and during. You may want to wear a trash bag with cutouts for arms and legs until race time, especially if you warm up very fast. Throw away garden gloves or socks work great on the hands. Old long sleeve running shirts make great throwaways as well. If you're not too concerned about your time, you could probably stop and pick up a new wardrobe with all the gloves, shirts and hats that will be littered along the streets of Chicago come race day.

Running with Asthma ~
Breathing is Highly Overrated Anyway
Jeff Ward

One of my recent Beacon News columns ruminated on the idea of turning 50. I may have mentioned lamenting the loss of that 25 year-old runner who could pull off a 48-minute 10k. Though I bitterly complain about 9:30 minute race miles today, old age does have its benefits.

You see, that same 25 year-old would've been laid low for weeks or even hospitalized by asthma attacks. But now my allergist tells the insurance company I'm asymptomatic and prednisone prescriptions are the exception and not the rule. So! How'd I do it? Let's start with the basics.
