Word from the Editor
Master the Mound? Embrace the Mound!

MoundThere are two things about me some of you may already know ...

1. I love a good challenge.
2. I get bored easily.

It's these two qualities (or curses) that prompt me to do things like run Johnson's Mound over and over again. It's definitely a tough challenge plodding up the highest point in Kane County and the first time I tried to run up that sucker I didn't make it the whole way. I actually had to walk the last few hundred meters, but that was about 5 years ago and I've since "mastered the mound" and can loop it several times now.

Foam Rolling for I.T. Band Problems
By David Ginsberg
 Foam Rolling
It seems I have seen a lot of IT band problems in the office lately, and come July and August is when I typically begin to see a lot of plantar fasciitis. I think the reason is that marathon training programs begin for most people around June. For many this results in an increase in mileage that is beyond their initial physical capability.

The increased training volume, regardless of your physical shape typically results in some tightness in the muscles, and more commonly on the outside of the leg at the knee or near the hip, which is the IT band musculature and fascia.

Bill HolstineCongrats to Bill Holstine!

Congratulations to FRTR member Bill Holstine who won his division at the 2009 RRCA National 5K championship Aug. 1 in Anniston, AL with a finish time of 17:16.

"When the student is ready ..."

As the Zen master would say, "the teacher appears." And boy was I was ready!

After cutting my cruising speed from 10:30 to 9 minute miles, managing some indoor 7:15 miles last winter and judiciously increasing my distance from 3 to 6 miles, I was a happy camper. Why, at the ripe old age of 50 I hadn't improved that much since my twenties.

Important News about Fox and Turkey
New Date: Thanksgiving Day, November 26th

Fox and TurkeyThis year's Fox and Turkey 4-mile and 1-mile race will is moving to Thanksgiving Day, November 26th! Please make note of it on your racing calendars.

This year's race will be a regular chip-timed race as opposed to a predictor race. We're hoping the move to Thanksgiving Day will increase participation. Many runners enjoy a Thanksgiving race after popping the turkey into the oven. But without a Thanksgiving race in the tri-cities area, it can pose a problem driving some distance to a race and getting back in time to finish dinner preparations.

The race course is the same as previous years. For more information about this year's race, visit our website.

Running for Charity
By Larry Lobb

Marine Corps MarathonI am running in the 34th Annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC (Oct. 25th) to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. The SOWF provides full scholarship grants, as well as educational and family counseling, to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations people and their families.

A full description of the charity is included on my Firstgiving page: http://www.firstgiving.com/larrylobb and donations can also be made through the site.  All donations are secure and sent directly to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation by Firstgiving, who will email the donor a printable record of the donation for tax purposes.
