A Word from the Editor
Get Out of that Running Rut in 2009
Jennifer Zuri

Now's the time of year when most Americans make New Year's Resolutions - ever hopeful that this will be the year they actually stick to those resolutions. For us runners, this marks the time when we plan our racing schedule for the year. Will we focus on speed and sign up for numerous 5K and 10K races, or will we bite the bullet and go for endurance, choosing a marathon or two (or three or four for you really crazy runners).

Whatever route you decide to go this training season, settling on a goal and determining the steps to get there are often what's needed to stay motivated and faithful to this sport we know and love. Adding something new to your racing schedule will also help keep you from feeling like you're in a running rut.

Starting Over!
By Steve Richey

SteveMany of you reading this have had forced interruptions to your running in the past, and have had to start over.  However for me, this is a first.  Since I starting running in August of 1997, I've never had a break of longer than 8 days (a calf muscle problem in 2001).  In the past, I've always found ways to simply slow the pace, and "run through it."  This time, though, I wasn't able to pull that off.

So, back on the 5th of December, I found myself walking on an indoor rubber track for a mile, while summoning the courage to take off on what proved to be an uneventful clunky 2 mile slow jog - my first run in several weeks.

Runner's Bio ~ Lesley Chermansky

LesleyWhat motivated you to start running?
What first motivated me to start running was while I was at my former employer.  The CEO was a fitness freak and he challenged the employees to a fitness race.  A group of us participated in running and I was hooked.  I liked the change in my weight and the way my clothes were fitting.  I also notice my improved fitness level.

You recently ran your first marathon.  What prompted you to tackle this event?
What prompted me to tackle this event was seeing if I could do it.  I had a lot of peer support and encouragement throughout my training.  While driving to Milwaukee, I remember thinking how I wasn't nervous (nothing like what I experienced running my first 20 miles during training).  It was then that I realized I had confidence that I could do 26.2 miles and come out proud.

A Technique and Balance to Improve Your Running in 2009
David Ginsberg

Christmas and the New Year's have come and gone and for many the reality of some extra pounds and a new running season just a few months away (well we can always wish the weather will come that soon) has sunk in. For many, this often means diving into regular running mileage again.

Unfortunately, this often occurs with little thought about looking back at the past season and identifying what were the successes and failures of the year. Did I even set any running goals. Did I have any PR's and if I did at what distance and how did I train for that event. Was I injured at all and am I fully recovered now. In fact, I find these questions are even more important for the seasoned runner who by experience alone can easily fall into a pattern of this is what I have always done.

New Year's Day Run

New Year's Run

Over 40 runners showed up in great spirits for the annual New Year's Day Run at Fabyan Park. A special thanks goes to Wayne Giese for his coordination of this event over the years, and a special mention goes to Bob Unger for supplying hot chocolate and decadent cookies this year. In usual fashion, Chris Johnson recognized runners' achievements during the past year.

Despite the nip in the air and the whip of the wind, it was an enjoyable run and a great way to start 2009. Photos of the event are available on our website.
