Hawthorn Half Day Race
By Steve Richey
The Short Version:
Hawthorn, 13 Jun 2009. Terre Haute, IN. 12 hours. Trails/hills. 62 ultrarunners + relay teams. Dirt, grass, gravel & asphalt. 65-82F. Clouds. Thunder. Rain. Mud. Humidity.
11 gels, 1 Ensure, 2 PB&J, 4 Cokes, 1-1/2 gal. Gatorade, water. 18x5K + 2x0.5 M = 56.93 miles total. Potatoes and beans. 2nd place grandmasters. Bruce Schmidt beat me. No blisters; 2 mushy toes. Lost my taste for gels and Gatorade for awhile. Felt great.
A Few More Details: This was my 4th Hawthorn Half Day race. It's on a 5K XC type course next to the Rose-Hulman campus in west central Indiana, and camping is allowed by the course. Read more

| Many Bikers are Runners Too!
By Bob Unger
I recently completed my annual bike trip. For the past 5 years I have done a week long bike trip called GRABAAWR (Great Annual Bike Adventure along the Wisconsin River),though last year I went across the State starting in LaCrosse in a ride called SAGBRAW.
During my first four days and the last day I rode with distance runners.

FRTR Member Larry Lobb ~
Running for Charity
By Larry Lobb
I am running in the 34th Annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC (Oct. 25th) to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. The SOWF provides full scholarship grants, as well as educational and family counseling, to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations people and their families.
A full description of the charity is included on my Firstgiving page: http://www.firstgiving.com/larrylobb and donations can also be made through the site. All donations are secure and sent directly to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation by Firstgiving, who will email the donor a printable record of the donation for tax purposes. |
| Advice for Avoiding Running Injuries
Submitted by David Ginsberg
The following is taken from Active Triathlete online newsletter. I agree nearly 100% with the content so changed very little.
Shoe and Running Tips for Injury Prevention:
1. Change your shoes often.
This is not the area to be trying to cut costs. When in doubt, throw them out (or recycle them, or whatever--just don't run in them!). Unless you are running an average of 10 miles a week, six months is too long to keep a pair of shoes. Err on the side of safety and replace shoes instead of trying to squeeze extra miles out of them.
2. Keep at least two pairs of shoes in the rotation, especially if you are running several days in a row. Use your running shoes strictly for running; wearing them to the gym or to run errands will shorten their lifespan and zap their cushioning.

The Race Place
This time of year provides a challenge in finding local races. Here are some races in and around the Fox Valley. For a full listing, visit www.cararuns.org.
