Word from the Editor~
Half the Distance, Twice the Fun!

One HalfLast month I wrote about the difficult decision to forego running a fall marathon this year and to save myself for the Boston Marathon next spring. Many of you sympathized with my struggle and sent emails to encourage me and to tell me not to feel guilty about it. Let me just say, I was truly humbled and thankful for your support. This is exactly why we have running clubs - to share each other's joys, victories, struggles, pains, and whatever else might tickle our fancy.

What's got me tickled right now is the half marathon distance! On June 7th I ran the inaugural 13.1 Chicago "Where the Party Meets the Pavement" Half Marathon. With a name like that, how could a runner possibly go wrong choosing this race?

Runner's Bio ~ Linda Feeney

Linda FeeneyYou recently became a Fox River Trail Runners member.  What enticed you to join the club?
I joined for the camaraderie that comes with belonging to a group with a common interest.

How long have you been running and what motivated you to start running?
OMG! I just realized that I have been running close to 30 years!  Yikes, and they said that it would never last! I got started running while I lived in Boston.  My apartment was 2 miles from the finish of the Boston Marathon.  Watching all those runners ignited my interest in running and the rest is history!

Overuse Injuries and Fatigue:
Iron Depletion Might Be the Culprit
By Dave Ginsberg

Tired RunnerMany runners may go through periods where they just seem exhausted. No matter how much they scale back their training, no matter how much rest they get, they just seem to be tired all the time. In addition, when they do run, their legs may feel heavy all the time. Or perhaps they are plagued with overuse injury after overuse injury.

In many instances, this can be the result of iron depletion. Iron depletion is not the same as iron deficiency. Iron binds to oxygen, which is necessary for your cells to produce energy. Iron carries oxygen to the cells. In true iron deficiency blood tests will show a low hematocrit and low hemoglobin levels (the iron in your blood) resulting in anemia.

Race Review:
NITRO Sycamore Speedway 5k and 10k
By Jennifer Zuri
Nitro Race

This inaugural race offered by the Northern Illinois Trail Runners Organization (NITRO) started with a fast lap around the Sycamore Speedway racetrack before exiting off onto the western end of the Great Western Trail. 5K runners split to the right, heading west on the trail while 10k runners split to the left, heading east.

I ran the 10k route and was impressed with the condition of the trail. I've run with the NITRO group on occasion and have never seen the west end of the trail look so good!
