Runner's Bio ~ Richard Smith
How long have you been running and what motivated you to start? I was a runner a long time ago when I was younger. In 1993 I stopped for a while. When our oldest child was in fourth grade four years ago I picked it back up. The kids really got me motivated to start running again.
How long have you been a member of FRTR and why did you decide to join? I join the trail runners this past November. I have been working with the Batavia Accelerators, which the trail runners sponsor. I felt it was necessary to join to help out.

False Pretenses
When I was asked to join FRTR, did anybody ever check my references, my "race results," or watch me plod along on a trail? If they had, then surely I should have been denied membership. Why would any running group want me? After all, most people can walk faster than I can "run." This is a group where the common bond is RUNNING.
Running, something I have avoided at all costs over much of my life. Running, the memory of which is mostly painful. Running, the punishment for not doing well in gym class. Running, the thing that causes civil unrest, unemployment, high interest rates, high popcorn prices at the movie theaters and A-Rod's use of banned substances.

Everything You Wanted to Know About the Boston Marathon But Were Afraid to Ask
Some of you are heading to Boston soon and sure enough, the jitters are probably starting to find their way to your stomach, legs, and any other vulnerable body part.
Steve Richey has shared a detailed Excel spreadsheet that covers everything from pacing, elevation charts, start times, and much more. Any Boston hopefuls -whether you're running the marathon this year or hoping to qualify - will do themselves a favor by checking out this detailed information. Please note, the Excel file has 10 tabs of information so be sure to check them all out!

| It's Really All About the Hat
Isola Metz
My legs are still tired and the Gasparilla half marathon was last weekend - it's called poor training. I highly recommend my strategy...gain a few (lbs.), train few (miles), sleep few (hours)...sleeping in your car the day before you leave is a nice touch when the power goes out and you can't get in the house. Eat lots of salty restaurant food two days prior to race day, nice for bloating or if near water, floating. It is a strategy that gets you through the race on grit and determination alone. Who needs training?
On the plus side Danielle Steimel is steadfast buddy #1 also doing the half (in less time). Always go with a buddy and then the strategy works! Buddies coordinate the event, remind you what you need at the grocery store for pre-race, pre-sunrise race day, tell you where to be and when and get you to the start on time!

Tying Your Shoes the Right Way!
Did you know there's a wrong and a right way to tie your running shoes? Remember when your kindergarten teacher was helping you learn to tie your shoes and told you the bunny rabbit had to run around the tree before it ducked into the hole?
Fear not! The bunny still has to run around the tree before ducking into the hole. You just need to make sure he runs around the tree in the right direction to get your shoelace knot just right. (If your teacher didn't show you the bunny trick, just ask Jennifer Zuri the next time you see her.)
Watch a handy video from Runner's World to find out if you're tying Granny Knots or Reef Knots. We'll be checking your shoes on the trail to see if you're a Granny or a Reefer!

River to River Relay
Runners Needed!
The Fox River Trail Runners have a team entry in the River to River Relay on April 18th and we still have 2 spots open on the team. The team will drive to Marion, Illinois on Friday morning, April 17th and drive back on Sunday, April 19th. The 80 mile race starts close to the Mississippi River and ends at the Ohio River:
~ 8 people on the team, each person runs 3 times over the course of the day - around 5k distance each time you run ~ Depending on paces of team members, we expect to finish in around 10 hours +/-
~ Cost to participate will be roughly $200-300 which includes registration, hotel, van, gas & team supplies
~ $ 45 now will secure you a spot on the team to cover the registration fee, and the rest will be taken care of that weekend
The team members so far include Dan Milinko, Chris Johnson, George Hettinger, Ryan Hettinger, Joe Vierthaler, and Michelle Trenkamp. The group is non-competitive, but fun! Anyone is welcome. If interested, contact Mary Milinko at marleeseff@gmail.com. More info on the race can be found at www.rrr.olm.net.
